Google AI Edge Gallery - Testing of AI models locally on Smartphones
Google has released an app that allows users to download and run openly available AI models locally on their smartphones.

The details
- The app, called Google AI Edge Gallery, is available for Android. An iOS app will come soon. With the app, you can find, download, and run AI models that generate text, write code, and answer questions.
- All models run offline locally on your smartphone. So you don’t need an internet connection. In addition, this makes sure that no personal or sensitive data is sent to a cloud server.
- The app is not available in the Google Play Store. Instead, you can download it from GitHub by following the provided instructions.
- The home screen of the app shows three example LLM use cases: Ask Image, Prompt Lab, and AI Chat. With Ask Image, you can upload a picture and ask questions about it. Prompt Lab is for tasks like summarizing text, rewriting tone, and generating code.

Our thoughts
This app allows people to run AI models locally. This approach makes sense for data protection because it ensures that no sensitive data is sent to the cloud. In our opinion, all tasks that can run locally should also remain on the device. The app is a great way to test state-of-the-art AI models on smartphones.
