The details

  • GPT-5.5 excels at software development, data analysis, research, and executing tools over extended periods of time. According to OpenAI, you can “give GPT‑5.5 a messy, multi-part task and trust it to plan, use tools, check its work, navigate through ambiguity, and keep going.”
  • In addition, GPT-5.5 needs significantly fewer tokens for the same tasks compared to GPT-5.4. The model has safeguards that are designed to reduce misuse while ensuring access for beneficial applications.
  • GPT-5.5 excels at agentic coding, handling complex development tasks that include planning, debugging, and tool use. OpenAI shows several examples, such as an interactive visualization of a space mission.
  • According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 outperforms other state-of-the-art models on key benchmarks. On the Artificial Analysis Coding Index, the model delivers the same performance as competitive frontier coding models at half the cost.

Our thoughts

Three companies are now battling for AI dominance: OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. But which models are better or worse varies from use case to use case. Not in the benchmarks published by the companies.

We currently use Google’s Gemini primarily as an assistant for coding tasks and research. What model do you use?
