## The details * Mentra has raised 8 million US dollars to develop the open-source operating system MentraOS 2.0. Early investors include well-known names like Rich Miner (Co-Founder of Android), Jawed Karim (Co-Founder of YouTube), and others. * Mentra’s AI glasses have a camera, microphone, and speakers. The glasses are also expected to be slightly lighter than the Meta Ray-Ban glasses and cost less. * The glasses support live streaming, live captions, translation, and an AI assistant. Additionally, the company plans an app store where developers can publish their apps. The founders say MentraOS is the “Android for smart glasses”. * Currently, the company already offers smart glasses (Even Realities G1) with a partner. That allows deaf people to communicate with others using live captions. The smart glasses have a 2-eye-display, allowing the user to see what someone says on both lenses.

**Our thoughts** The AI glasses market is highly competitive. Meta already has two glasses on the market, and Google plans to provide developer tools for AI glasses later this year. Additionally, Apple is reportedly already working on smart glasses.
