Top AI news of the week
🤖 OpenAI presents the AI agent Operator
OpenAI has launched Operator, an AI agent that can autonomously perform tasks on the web. The AI agent is currently in a test phase and is only available in the US.
The details:
- The new AI agent can perform tasks on the internet by itself, such as placing orders or booking an Uber.
- The AI agent browses the web like a human and has its own web browser. You can see all actions on the screen. In case of errors or critical situations, the agent gives control back to the user.
- Operator uses a new AI model called Computer-Using Agent (CUA) in combination with GPT-4o’s vision capabilities. CUA is optimized for graphical user interfaces (GUIs).
- Operator is currently only available for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the US.

Our thoughts
You can hear the term “AI agent” almost everywhere in the AI bubble. Last year, Microsoft announced a swarm of agents for 2025. Now, OpenAI has introduced Operator, and Perplexity has presented its own AI agent called Perplexity Assistant. We are excited to see what else Microsoft will introduce this year.
In our opinion, AI agents can simplify many workflows, but AI agents should be excluded from critical use cases such as banking transactions. These are exciting times! We have already written several articles about AI agents on our blog. Check it out!

🤯 Project Stargate: $500 billion for AI data centers
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank plan to invest 500 billion US dollars in AI data centers over the next four years.
The details:
- The Stargate project is a joint venture between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. Initially, they will invest $100 billion to build large data centers in Texas.
- Texas has a lot of wind energy capacity, which is ideal for the massive power demands of AI data centers.
- According to the new US government, the project will create 100,000 new jobs in the United States.
- In addition, the new US government cancelled President Biden’s guidelines for the development of AI.
Our thoughts
Absolutely crazy! The big US tech companies are investing massively in AI. AI can be used for many beneficial purposes in the future, such as fighting diseases. We strongly believe that using AI in the right way will make the world a better place.

💭 DeepSeek R1: Free and open-source OpenAI o1 competitor
The Chinese AI company DeepSeek has released DeepSeek R1, an open-source reasoning model. According to DeepSeek, the new model matches or exceeds OpenAI’s o1 on several benchmarks.
The details:
- The biggest model of DeepSeek R1 has 671B parameters and a context length of 128K but there are also smaller versions with fewer parameters. You can run the smaller models locally on your laptop.
- According to DeepSeek, DeepSeek R1 beats OpenAI’s o1 on several benchmarks (see comparison below).
- According to VentureBeat, the API costs for the hosted version of R1 are more than 90% cheaper than comparable APIs.
- The model has been published under the MIT license, allowing you to use and modify it for free. In addition, commercial use is allowed.
- Several sizes of DeepSeek R1 are available on HuggingFace and Ollama.

Our thoughts
DeepSeek R1 is a big attack on all closed-source models. The performance and free availability make the model very interesting for companies that prefer to run their models on their own hardware. In addition, the DeepSeek R1 model can be customized to specific needs, reducing dependence on external providers.
This publication demonstrates that open-source AI is now on a similar level to closed-source AI. It’s very exciting to see what’s happening in the open-source AI world right now.
