Perplexity introduces an AI web browser
Perplexity launched its first AI web browser, called Comet. This puts the AI startup in direct competition with Google Search. The battle for search dominance begins.
The details
- According to Perplexity, the internet of recent years is not ideal for the natural flow of thought. This is why they developed Comet.
- The new browser, Comet, is based on Chromium and uses Perplexity’s AI Search as its search engine. Chromium is Google’s open-source browser platform that also powers Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
- In addition, users have access to Comet Assistant. This is an AI agent designed to automate routine tasks (navigating websites, summarizing emails and calendar events). The AI agent is available on websites through a sidebar.
- At launch, Comet will only be available to Perplexity Max subscribers ($200 per month) and a small group of invited users. You can also join a waitlist.
Our thoughts
Many AI startups are trying to get a part of Google’s market share. So far, without success. Google remains the market leader and has one of the most powerful AI models on the market. Additionally, Google is experimenting with an AI search. Currently, Google’s Chrome is the number 1 web browser. It will be difficult for Perplexity, along with other AI startups, to succeed here.
There are also rumors that Apple might acquire Perplexity. This would change the game because Apple could set Perplexity Search as the default search in its operating systems instead of Google Search.
