Publishers protest against Google’s AI Mode

Google is testing the AI Mode in search in the United States. Not to be confused with AI Overviews. Publishers worry about getting less traffic to their websites.

The details

  • Google’s AI Mode allows users to interact with Google Search like it is a chatbot. The News Media Alliance from the media sector doesn’t like this. They call the AI outputs “theft”.
  • Google generates AI responses using publisher content without providing compensation and without offering an efficient opt-out option.
  • Publishers can only completely opt out their content from AI training. The consequence is that they no longer appear in the search results. According to the News Media Alliance, this is an unsuitable solution, especially for smaller companies.
  • Google uses content from the web and its own knowledge graph for the new feature. The knowledge graph contains the knowledge that the company has collected in a gigantic database.
