🤖 Tesla unveiled a new version of its humanoid robot
Tesla has presented Optimus Gen 2, a more refined humanoid robot with improved speed, balance, and weight. The robot has new hands for precise handling. The finger sensors make it possible to manipulate sensitive objects.
The video shows Optimus delicately handling an egg. The company plans to sell the robot once its effectiveness is proven. Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicts high demand for Optimus and explains that it could account for most of Tesla’s long-term value. Take a look at the video. It’s impressive how quickly Tesla is making progress.

Our thoughts
Tesla has made truly amazing progress with this Optimus upgrade. In the future, the robot could be used in Tesla factories, which could optimize processes and save costs. We are living in a very exciting time. But do we really need such human-like robots? We are undecided.

🧐 EU committees agree on comprehensive AI rules
EU officials have agreed on a preliminary deal to create the first comprehensive law regulating AI systems. The Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) aims to oversee high-risk AI with transparency, risk management, and human review. It also addresses contentious issues like facial recognition use, and allowing law enforcement applications.
The act will be officially voted on next year and won’t be effective until at least 2025. Learn more in the official Press Release.
Our thoughts
AI regulation is a much-debated topic. Some believe the law doesn’t go far enough, while others believe it will destroy Europe’s potential for AI progress. As a result, the AI Act doesn’t present much that is new, as some things are already regulated by previous laws. However, the message “Europe is a pioneer in AI regulation” is going out into the world.

💬 Mistral AI announced a new open-source model
Mistral AI has launched Mixtral 8x7B, an open-source model that outperforms many competitors, including Llama 2 70B and GPT3.5. This model, called a sparse mixture of experts network, can handle multiple languages (English, French, Italian, German and Spanish) and excels in code generation.
It can also be finetuned to follow instructions, scoring well on MT-Bench. Despite having 46.7B total parameters, it only uses 12.9B per token, making it efficient in terms of cost and processing speed. Mixtral is pre-trained on data from the open Web.
Mistral has also introduced La Plateforme, a platform that offers API access to hosted versions of Mixtral and its other models.
Our thoughts
Mistral sets new standards in terms of the efficiency and performance of open-source models. It is great to see a European AI start-up at the forefront.
It is also impressive that the new model has outperformed Llama 2 and GPT3.5 in some benchmarks. It is a win for the open-source community.
