xAI unveils Grok 3 Beta
xAI introduced Grok 3, a family of advanced models (Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini) with strong reasoning capabilities and extensive pretraining knowledge. Before the presentation, Elon Musk, the CEO of xAI, described the model as the “Smartest AI on Earth”.
The details
- Grok 3 achieved SOTA performance in reasoning, mathematics, coding, world knowledge, and instruction-following tasks. It outperforms Gemini-2 Pro, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and GPT4o on several benchmarks.
- The new models provide two new modes: Think and DeepSearch. The mode “DeepSearch” searches deeply in the internet to deliver detailed, well-reasoned answers with Grok’s agentic search. The mode “Think” is ideal for solving problems in math, science, and coding.
- The models were trained with 10x more computing power than Grok-2, using xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, which has 200,000 H100 GPUs.
- Grok 3 is available to X Premium and Premium+ users on X and Grok.com. X Premium+ users have also access to Think and DeepSearch. For a short time, both modes are free for all users.
Our thoughts
The two-year-old startup xAI is now competing with the big AI companies. It’s really impressive how quickly xAI has been able to catch up with OpenAI, Google, Meta, and others. xAI describes Grok 3 as “the world’s smartest AI” and the test results confirm this.
We have tested Grok 3 and are impressed with how well the model answers mathematical questions step by step. The Think mode is particularly suitable for this. We also tried out the DeepSearch mode and found it helpful for research tasks.
