AI pioneer launches an AI safety startup
Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio founded an organization focused on AI safety because he believes state-of-the-art AI models can be dangerous. By the way, he received the Turing Award in 2018 along with Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun.
The details
- The organization, called LawZero, focuses on the dangers of AI and wants to develop a solution. According to Bengio, current AI models have learned dangerous abilities and behaviors such as deception, cheating, and lying.
- He is very concerned about the behaviors that unrestricted agentic AI systems are starting to show. In an experiment, an AI model that was supposed to be replaced covertly embedded its code into the system to ensure its own survival.
- In another experiment, an AI model began hacking a computer because it refused to accept losing a chess game. So, the AI wanted to secure its victory. According to Bengio, these events show an implicit drive for self-preservation of AI models.
- These incidents are early warning signs of the potential dangers that AI could pose in the future. For this reason, LawZero plans to develop an AI called Scientist AI to monitor agent-based and untrustworthy AI.

AI models are becoming more powerful. We welcome Bengio’s initiative. This way, AI can be developed responsibly and with control. AI should not be a danger to humanity but rather bring benefits to it. We must be able to intervene at any time.
