Top AI news of the week

🤖 Apple: LLMs are not capable of genuine logical reasoning!

Apple researchers doubt the logical reasoning capabilities of current large language models. In a study, the researchers examined the mathematical reasoning capabilities of LLMs.

The details:

  • According to the researchers, current LLMs use advanced pattern matching.
  • Inaccurate prompts and irrelevant information can confuse the LLM.
  • According to the study, “current LLMs are not capable of genuine logical reasoning; instead, they attempt to replicate the reasoning steps observed in their training data.“
  • The researchers have introduced a new benchmark, called GSM-Symbolic, to better evaluate the mathematical capabilities of LLMs.

Our thoughts

The study shows that LLMs respond based on the training data and are not capable of “real” reasoning. It often seems that way because the answers often look like it.

In addition, current LLMs can get confused if you add unnecessary information in the prompts. For this reason, prompts should always be specific and clear.

🗣️ Babbel app soon with an AI language trainer

The popular language learning app Babbel plans to integrate an AI language trainer by the end of the year. Competitors, such as Duolingo, already offer a similar service.

The details:

  • Babbel calls the function “Conversational Coach,” and the AI trainer is designed to be professional, unlike the gamified approach used by Duolingo.
  • The functionality is based on OpenAI technology, and it likely uses the GPT-4o model.
  • Babbel plans to include the new AI trainer in the current subscription model.
  • In addition to the AI trainer, there will still be online courses with real teachers.

Our thoughts

We find such functionalities in language learning apps very helpful! Many people are hesitant to practice their language skills with real people. With an AI language trainer, this barrier is much lower.

An AI language trainer closes this gap and serves as a transition to real conversations. In our opinion, this use case is perfect for AI.

The details:

  • The new family includes Ministral 3B and 8B.
  • The models are suitable for on-device translation, internet-less smart assistants, local analytics, and autonomous robotics.
  • The new models outperform models like Gemma and Llama on various benchmarks.
