Mistral AI announced Mistral Small 3.1. It’s an open-source model that outperforms similar models like GPT-4o Mini or Gemma 3 in several benchmarks and terms of inference speed.
The details
- Mistral Small 3.1, built on Mistral Small 3, has improved text performance, multimodal understanding, and an expanded context window (up to 128k tokens).
- The new model is very fast, with an inference speed of 150 tokens per second. See the benchmark results in the image below.
- Mistral Small 3.1 is a model designed to handle various AI tasks, such as following instructions, providing conversational assistance, understanding images, and making function calls.
- The model is perfect for on-device use cases. It can run on a Mac with 32 GB RAM or a single NVIDIA RTX 4090. Ideal for local agentic workflows. It’s available on Hugging Face and Ollama.
