OpenAI presents GPT-4.5
OpenAI released a research preview of GPT-4.5 (code-named Orion). It uses unsupervised learning to achieve deeper world knowledge. According to OpenAI, it’s their largest and best model for chat yet.

The details
- OpenAI writes in the blog post that GPT-4.5 has a higher level of emotional intelligence (EQ). The new model provides brief and clear answers, whereas GPT-4o often gets lost in detailed explanations. So, it seems more human.
- According to OpenAI, the model is useful for tasks like creative writing, programming, and solving practical problems. The model should also hallucinate less.
- However, GPT-4.5 performs worse in some benchmarks compared to other leading LLMs like Grok 3 or o3-mini. In addition, it does not support multimodal features like video or voice mode.
- The new model is already available for ChatGPT Pro users. Next week, Plus and Team users will also gain access. In addition, the API costs of GPT-4.5 are significantly higher than for GPT-4o.
Our thoughts
The benchmark results and the high price are disappointing. The question is why OpenAI is releasing a model that can’t compete with other state-of-the-art models. We expected more. According to rumors, OpenAI plans to release GPT-5 in May.
